New slogan marks new era for PGA of South Africa

JOHANNESBURG (12 September 2016) – The PGA of South Africa launched its new logo and slogan at its inaugural awards dinner at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club on Monday evening, entrenching its vision of being the heart of golf and using the game to make a greater impact in South Africa.

“Touching lives through the game of golf” is the new slogan for the country’s oldest association of professional golfers. It was introduced by legendary South African professional, commentator and PGA of South Africa Honorary Life President Denis Hutchinson.

Sun City's new golf manager is on the ball

RUSTENBURG, North West (27 January 2016) - Quintin Byleveldt is certainly a man for a challenge. The 27-year-old PGA of South Africa professional took over as the Golf Operations Manager at Sun City only a few months before the 2015 Nedbank Golf Challenge, and at the same time his wife was due to give birth.

"It was quite a big step up for me. In six months I've already been involved with four Sunshine Tour events and a major tournament such as the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Then there's been the task of working with international guests and different languages. But it's been fantastic," says Byleveldt, who is relishing the opportunity of managing two world-class golf courses at one of the most iconic of South African tourist venues.

PGA of SA on drive to help golf clubs grow

JOHANNESBURG (26 January 2016) - The PGA of South Africa will this year intensify its drive to assist golf clubs in growing their membership base with the introduction of its new "Valuing the PGA Professional" programme at clubs around the country.

Since November last year, the PGA has been providing its member professionals with best practices that drive more participation in the game, including various new initiatives which they will be implementing at golf clubs across South Africa.

SA 14th at International Teams Champs

JOHANNESBURG (15 December 2015) - The PGA of South Africa has ended off its tournament year with a finish of tied 14th in the PGAs of Europe International Team Championships at the Gloria Golf Resort in Turkey.

The team of Mike Michell from Clovelly Golf Club, Serengeti's Ryan Reid and the River Club's Gregg Upton finished the 72-hole team tournament on eight over par, 14 shots behind champions France.

Koro Creek to host SA's top PGA pros

JOHANNESBURG (14 December 2015) - The 2016 PGA National Championship presented by Diners Club will make history when it travels to the Limpopo Province for the first time, with Koro Creek Bushveld Golf Estate set to host the premier tournament on the PGA of South Africa's calendar.

The tournament features all of the country's PGA professionals competing for a total prize fund of R250 000 from 9-12 May.

PGA honours Rupert

MALELANE, Mpumalanga (25 November 2015) - Johann Rupert has been awarded Honorary Membership of the PGA of South Africa, becoming the first amateur golfer in the 90-year history of the PGA of South Africa to receive this award.

Rupert received the award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to golf in South Africa and globally, including his role as the Chairman of the Sunshine Tour, his support of South African amateur golf, and his founding and continued support of the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB).

Strong PGA team to represent SA in Turkey

JOHANNESBURG (16 November 2015) - The PGA of South Africa has announced a strong team to represent the country at the International Team Championship in Turkey this December.

Clovelly Golf Club's Mike Michell, Serengeti's Ryan Reid and the River Club's Gregg Upton will seek to lead South Africa to a first victory in the PGAs of Europe's most prestigious team competition, which will be played at the Gloria Golf Resort from 8-11 December.

Manyama completes his "Grand Slam" at PGA Champs

PGAs approve volunteer coaches for Olympic golf growth

JOHANNESBURG (31 July 2015) - With golf's inclusion in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics being seen as a means to grow the game globally, the PGAs of the world have agreed on a new framework to allow more volunteer coaches to work in golf.

The framework was discussed and agreed upon at the PGA World Alliance meeting held on the weekend before the recent Open Championship in St Andrews.

SA golf has a new "Grand Slam champion"

The 72-year-old Manyama has risen from the streets of Soweto to become one of world golf's most respected rules officials and a man known by the world's leading professional golfers, from Tiger Woods to Ernie Els to Miguel Angel Jiminez.

Lamprecht makes PGA National Champs history

GEORGE (14 May 2015) - Albertinia Golf Club, the home club of Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, now has another champion to celebrate after Blanche Lamprecht won the PGA of South Africa's National Championship presented by Diners Club at Oubaai Golf Club on Thursday.

Lamprecht claimed the biggest victory of his career with a final round of 73, fighting off the experience of multiple Sunshine Tour winner Roger Wessels to finish with a total of three-under-par 213.

GEORGE (13 May 2015) - Roger Wessels said it was a bit like calling up the past, and as the joint leader going into Wednesday's final round of the PGA National Championship presented by Diners Club at Oubaai he's hoping to draw on the experiences of his years on the European and Sunshine Tours.

The 54-year-old Wessels signed for a round of 69 to share the lead with Blanche Lampecht on four under par, three strokes clear of Kenneth Dube and Michael Michell. Lamprecht kept his challenge on track with a second successive round of 70.

GEORGE (12 May 2015) - Former European Tour and Sunshine Tour professional Roger Wessels showed his experience with a round of one-under-par 71 to place him only one stroke off the first-round lead in the PGA National Championship presented by Diners Club at Oubaai Golf Club on Tuesday.

The 54-year-old Wessels, a nine-time winner during his career as a touring professional on the Sunshine Tour and including the 1991 SA PGA Championship, is chasing the shared two-under-par lead of Gauteng's Marius Mizen and the Western Cape's Blanche Lamprecht.

Experience of PGA pros rewarded with new Seal

JOHANNESBURG (23 April 2015) - The experience and status of this country's PGA professionals will now be more clearly identifiable following the launch of the PGA of South Africa's new Member Seal this month.

The new Seal includes a section on the bottom that now clearly identifies the member as either a newly qualified Class A Professional or a veteran Master Professional with a minimum of 20 years experience in the industry.

Swede success for Henrik in World Club Pro-Am

DURBAN (24 February 2015) - Swede Henrik Engdahl successfully defended his Mercedes-Benz World Club Pro-Am title in KwaZulu-Natal last week, beating Namibia's Steve Basson and South Africa's Michael du Toit.

A total of 32 teams consisting of PGA professionals from around the world and their amateur partners took part in the five-day tournament over the five courses of Durban Country Club, Zimbali Country Club, Prince's Grant Golf Estate, Cotswold Downs Golf Estate and Mt Edgecombe Country Club Course 1.

Golf makes offenders ready and wise for rehabilitation

Glencoe Correctional Services is making rehabilitation a reality and changing the lives of offenders through golf.

The prison is the only one in the country to use the Golfwise programme, which gives offenders a recognised certificate that will help them to find a job, upon their release, through the life skills they have learnt.

Now in its ninth year, the Golfwise programme is headed by Gerrie Marais of Glencoe Correctional Services, who read about a similar project at Leeukop Prison, Gauteng, pioneered by golf pro Dale Hayes.

PGA inspires W. Cape golf clubs to work together

JOHANNESBURG (13 August 2014) - The South African golf team for the 2015 Special Olympics has been selected following the National Special Olympics Tournament at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club on Monday.

Multiple Special Olympics gold medallist Tom Lugg will lead the South African team at the 2015 Games in Los Angeles from 25 July to 2 August.
